Located in Bangalore, India, this high tech design for General Electric encompasses a showroom and community centre with quality materials including stone, glass and vertical metal louvers. Square in plan, the building features an entertainment centre, training centre and courtyard on the ground floor and meeting rooms on the first. One of the standout aspects is the beautiful decking area on the roof, as well as extensive landscaping and water features at ground level. The clean lines and solid pillars supporting the upper level reference the seminal Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier, transported to 21st Century South India.

Considering the challenging triangular shape of the plot, the lobby space planning was designed as an organic form, starting from the entrance as a funnel, wide at the lobby entrance, and narrowing as it eventually swerves and connects to the meeting and conference room zone. An L-shape floor plate was conceived as the ideal form for the building. Responding to the client’s requirement for minimal curtain walls, the facade design features a composition of randomly placed lime stone panels, visually stabilized by a strong expression of horizontal stone slabs of varying rhythms and thicknesses. Curtain walls were strategically placed at certain corners, where they appear to slip behind the stone cladding. . Upper floors contain furnished apartments while the first floor features a podium with a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and cascading landscaping.

With the absence of a GFA restriction on the plot, one of the key challenges was maximizing coverage without compromising the efficiency of the development and still being able to provide a spacious courtyard.

Avoiding a kitsch aesthetic, inappropriate for academia, Lacasa’s designers employed an abstract, emotional reference to a castle while maintaining a sense of fun, with coloured mullions and glass panels.
